Seating Chart Randomizer

Paste your class list, set up rows and desks, and shuffle everyone into a new random seat. Print it in one click.

New seats in seconds

Changing a seating plan by hand takes time, and students often suspect favoritism. The Seating Chart Randomizer shuffles your class into the desks you set up — rows from the front of the room to the back — and creates a clean, printable chart. Students see the shuffle happen, so the new seats feel fair.

How to make a random seating chart

  1. Paste your students, one name per line.
  2. Set the layout: number of rows and desks per row to match your room.
  3. Press Shuffle seats. Seat 1 is at the front-left.
  4. Press Print chart to print only the chart, or project it on the board.

Why random seating helps

  • Breaks up friendship clusters that lead to chatter.
  • Builds community as students work with new neighbors.
  • Saves planning time every term or half-term.
  • Removes perceived favoritism — the computer chose.

Tips for teachers

If some students need specific seats — for example near the front for vision or hearing — seat them first and enter only the remaining students into the randomizer, adjusting the rows to match the free desks. Reshuffle at regular intervals (weekly or monthly) to keep things fresh.

The randomizer also works for events: dinner tables, exam halls and workshop seating. To create work groups instead of seats, use the Random Group Maker; to choose who answers next, use the Random Student Picker.
