Random Group Maker

Need pairs, trios or groups of five? Set the group size, paste your names and get random groups instantly.

Random groups of any size

The Random Group Maker splits a list of people into groups of a size you choose — pairs for peer review, threes for discussion, fours for projects. It works out how many groups are needed and spreads people evenly, so you never end up with one lonely person in the last group.

How to make random groups

  1. Paste your list of names, one per line.
  2. Make sure People per group is selected and enter the size (for example, 3).
  3. Press Make groups.
  4. Copy or print the groups — or press again for a fresh mix.

If the numbers do not divide exactly, the extra people are spread across the groups. For example, 10 people in groups of 3 becomes three groups of 4, 3 and 3 — nobody is ever left in a group on their own.

When to use random groups

  • Think-pair-share and peer marking in class.
  • Breakout rooms for online meetings and webinars.
  • Speed networking and conference roundtables.
  • Lab partners and study buddies.
  • Secret Santa pairs or buddy systems for trips.

Why random grouping works

Random groups break up cliques, mix skill levels and help people work with classmates or colleagues they would not normally choose. Because the process is visibly random, it also avoids complaints about unfair groupings. Want a fixed number of teams instead? Switch to Number of teams, or use the Random Team Generator. For seating, try the Seating Chart Randomizer.

Group Maker — FAQ

How do I make random pairs?

Choose “People per group” and enter 2. If there is an odd number of people, one group will have three.

What happens if the numbers don’t divide evenly?

The tool balances the groups so sizes differ by at most one person.

Can I reshuffle the groups?

Yes. Press “Make groups” again for a completely new random arrangement.

Is my list saved?

Your list is saved in your browser so you can reuse it next time. It is never uploaded.
