Random Team Generator

Paste a list of names, choose how many teams you need and get fair, evenly sized random teams in one click.

Make fair teams in one click

Picking teams by hand is slow and can feel personal — someone is always chosen last. The Random Team Generator shuffles your list and deals names into teams like cards, so teams are random, fair and as even in size as possible. Team sizes never differ by more than one person.

How to generate random teams

  1. Paste names into the box, one per line.
  2. Choose Number of teams (for example, 4 teams) — or switch to People per group.
  3. Tick Give teams fun names for names like “Purple Panthers” and “Teal Tigers”.
  4. Press Generate teams and watch players drop into each team.
  5. Copy the results into a chat or email, or Print them for the wall.

Where a team generator helps

  • PE and sports: five-a-side, basketball, relay races and tournaments.
  • Classroom projects: mixed-ability groups without accusations of favoritism.
  • Workshops and training: mix people from different departments.
  • Quiz nights and game nights: balanced, random trivia teams.
  • Esports and online games: custom lobbies and scrims.
  • Icebreakers: new groups for every round so people meet everyone.

Teams vs. groups — which tool?

Use this page when you know how many teams you need (for example, 3 teams for a relay). If you know how many people should be in each group (for example, pairs or groups of 4), the Random Group Maker is set up for that. Both use the same fair shuffling.

Tips for balanced teams

Random teams are fair, but you can tweak the result: generate once, then press the button again if two very strong players land together — everyone can see the process is still random. For classroom groups, combine with the Random Student Picker to choose a team captain.

Team Generator Wheel — FAQ

Are the teams always even?

As even as possible. If the names do not divide exactly, some teams get one extra person, but sizes never differ by more than one.

Can I name the teams?

Tick “Give teams fun names” for random colorful names. Otherwise teams are numbered Team 1, Team 2 and so on.

How many people can I split?

Hundreds. Paste as many names as you like and choose up to 100 teams.

Can I print or share the teams?

Yes. Use “Copy” to paste the teams anywhere, or “Print” for a clean printout.
